Programs Aiding Employees and Survivors Underway

CARPINTERIA, Calif. -- Sept. 14, 2005 -- In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Americans have been saddened to see the destruction to the Gulf Coast region. CKE Restaurants, Inc. president and CEO Andrew Puzder and his corporate team extend their sympathy to everyone affected by the disaster.

"People across the nation have been affected directly and indirectly by the havoc wrought by Hurricane Katrina. We feel a strong corporate responsibility to not only aid our own employees in this time of great need but to extend a hand to as many of the victims of this disaster as we can," Puzder said. "CKE and its Carl's Jr.(R), Hardee's(R) and La Salsa(R) brands are committed to providing aid to those affected by the hurricane."

To assist the efforts of the American Red Cross, CKE Restaurants, Inc. has initiated fund-raising efforts in all of its restaurants. Carl's Jr. and La Salsa restaurants began accepting donations to support victims of the hurricane on September 8. Participating Hardee's restaurants will begin the same program this week. Guests who donate $1 toward relief efforts receive a sticker reading, "I Supported Hurricane Relief Today." 100 percent of every dollar donated will go directly to the American Red Cross to further their relief efforts.

The Independent Hardee's Franchisee Association (IHFA) has established a hurricane relief fund to assist Gulf Coast area franchisee restaurant employees whose lives have been devastated in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Proceeds from this fund will be used solely to help individual Hardee's franchisee employees meet basic needs including housing, food, and other essentials. CKE Restaurants, Inc. has made a contribution to the fund.

"The fund will not be used to rebuild or repair damaged Hardee's restaurants in the affected area," said Lee Staak, IHFA president.

Puzder has also authorized a direct corporate donation of $100,000 to supply aid to the affected residents of the Gulf Coast, including funds for restaurants to supply food to displaced hurricane victims.

"The people of the Gulf Coast have a long and slow recovery ahead from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina," said Kathleen Loehr, vice president of Strategic Fundraising for the American Red Cross. "Thanks to the generous help of CKE Restaurants, Inc. and its patrons, the Red Cross will be able to provide help to those in need."
