Six Units Slated to Open in San Antonio & Austin in 2008
CARPINTERIA, Calif. – Sept. 3, 2008 – There’s a new star in the Lonestar State and his name is Happy Star™. The iconic logo of the Carl’s Jr.® hamburger chain is shining in Texas as the first new restaurant in San Antonio opened Labor Day weekend. Six new units are slated to open in San Antonio and Austin by the end of 2008.
The smiling star logo has been associated with the Carl’s Jr. brand for more than 65 years. Industry pioneer Carl N. Karcher and his wife, Margaret, using $15 in savings and borrowing $311 on their Plymouth automobile, purchased a single hot dog cart in 1941 in Los Angeles. The Karchers grew their small business to include four hotdog carts and opened Carl’s Drive-In Barbeque in 1945. They eventually launched the first Carl’s Jr. restaurant, so named because it was a smaller version of their sit-down restaurant, in 1956. From a lone hotdog cart, Carl’s Jr. has grown to more than 1,100 units in 14 Western states.

Carl’s Jr. burgers are charbroiled, never fried, giving them a more savory “grilled in your own backyard” flavor. A Carl’s Jr. classic that is sure to become a Texas favorite, the Western Bacon Cheeseburger® features a charbroiled all-beef patty, topped with two slices of bacon, melted American cheese, two crispy onion rings and tangy barbeque sauce. The premium Six Dollar Burger line at Carl’s Jr. starts with a 100 percent Black Angus beef patty and is topped with market-fresh produce including whole-leaf lettuce, red onions and bread-and-butter pickles. Choices include The Original Six Dollar Burger®, the Guacamole Bacon Six Dollar Burger™, and a Jalapeno-topped version. All sandwich offerings are available low-carb style, wrapped in lettuce instead of a bun.
Carl’s Jr. Natural-Cut Fries are a cut above as well, sliced thicker with the skins left on similar to what you would find at a sit-down restaurant or steakhouse. In keeping with their commitment to premium-quality, Carl’s Jr. is the only major brand to hand scoop hard-packed ice cream for its shakes and malts. Flavors include the traditional vanilla, chocolate and strawberry, as well as Oreo® cookie.
Featuring a tagline of “Breakfast As Big As Our Burgers™,” Carl’s Jr. breakfast offerings include the hearty Big Biscuit, baked fresh daily, as well as a selection of authentic Breakfast Burritos with fresh salsa, and premium Channel Islands Roasting Co. coffee.
The first Company-owned San Antonio unit, located at 6588 FM-78/Seguin Rd. at Rittman Rd., opened on Labor Day weekend, with the second at 13980 Nacogdoches Rd., slated to open later this month. The first new Austin-area Carl’s Jr. is scheduled to open in November. Carl’s Jr. currently has 15 franchised units in Texas, including eight in El Paso, five in the greater Dallas area, and one each in Laredo and San Antonio.
